PMFD has responded to multiple fires caused by spontaneous combustion of oily rags over the past few years

This morning we responded to yet another fire resulting in improper disposal of oily rags. Thankfully this event was limited to loss of garbage cans.

We wanted to remind everyone that oil paints, stains, varnishes, and turpentine release heat as the rag dries. Oil soaked rags packed closely together, or thrown into a pile, can smolder and ignite a fire.

It is recommended to dry oil soaked rags outside by laying flat on the ground or noncombustible surface. Once dry, place into a metal container with water and a tight fitting lid.

And as always, follow manufacturer specifications and warning labels found on the products container.
