| Station
#27 was dispatched for a possible dwelling fire at 1102 hrs.
#2753 arrived 2 minutes after dispatch. Command reported a
working dwelling fire in a ranch style house. Heavy smoke
was showing. When A/C Grube arrived a neighbor told him that
everyone was out of the house except for the family dog. He
was trapped in the basement.
The
first arriving engine (#2711) was ordered to advance a 1 3/4 preconnected
line through a door into the dining room. A hydrant line was
made from a hydrant that was less than 100' from the house.
Three children were in the basement when one of them thought they
smelled smoke. The oldest boy went up the steps. When
he opened the door, he saw flames coming from the dining room.
His next move was to get his two brothers out of the house.
Station 53 was automatically dispatched because of the time of day,
and type of fire. Command requested an engine and crew from
Station 14. #1413 arrived just as the interior crew was knocking
down the fire. Command ordered a second preconnect from #2711
be stretched through the front door to assist the crew that was
operating in the dining room. Another crew from #14 was sent
into the basement to search for the dog. Not long after they
reached the cellar, the basement crew notified Command that they
had found the dog. They also reported that they did not think
they could get the dog out of the basement because of the heavy
smoke conditions on the first floor. Command instructed the
crew to stay in the basement while the other crews vented.
A vent hole had already been cut in the roof to the rear of the
structure. And interior crews were reporting the fire knocked
down. PPV was started, and the basement windows were broken
out. A short time later the dog was in the front yard running
around. Crews pulled ceilings and opened walls to check for
extension. The fire was declared under control at 1142 hrs.
#14 and #53 were released at 1209 hrs and all Station 27 units were
clear at 1500 hrs.
Station
25 was on stand-by in Fire Station 1 and Station 23 was on stand-by
in Fire Station 2. The fire is under investigation
by the insurance company.
