May 2, 2003 - 1655 hours - Large brush fire at Yard Waste Recycling Center

Station #27 responded to a large brush fire at the end of Berks St.  This area is used by Palmer Township for a recycle center for yard waste.  Upon arrival, #2751 assumed command, and reported smoke and fire in the middle of a 200' long pile of brush.  The entire pile measured 200' long, 20' wide and 10' high.  A large pile of leaf compost was also involved later, due to radiant heat.  A water supply was established from a fire hydrant 1400' away.  #2713 supplied #2711 and #2712 from this hydrant.  Two deluge guns and numerous hand lines were used to control the fire.  With the help of three pieces of equipment from the Palmer Public Works Department, and once piece from a local contractor, the fire was under control in two hours.  Units from Stations #23 and #53 were on stand-by for #27.  These units were eventually moved to the fire scene for manpower.  The fire is under investigation.
